Chemistry Nobel Award Recognizes 3 Researchers for Groundbreaking Work on Metal-Organic Frameworks

This year's prestigious award in Chemistry is given to three distinguished scientists for their foundational research on porous materials.

The scientists' investigations could be applied to address some of the significant global issues, for instance CO2 capture to fight environmental shifts or minimizing plastic pollution through sophisticated chemical processes.

ā€œI'm deeply honoured and delighted, thank you very much,ā€ remarked Prof. Kitagawa in a phone call with the news conference following hearing the announcement.
ā€œWhat’s the duration I need to remain? I have an appointment to attend,ā€ he continued.

The 3 laureates receive monetary reward amounting to 11 million Swedish kronor (equivalent to £872,000).

Molecular Architecture at the Center of their Breakthrough

Their researchers' work centers around how chemical compounds are structured in unison into intricate structures. The selection panel described it as ā€œmolecular architectureā€.

The professors developed methods to create assemblies with substantial spaces among the molecules, permitting various substances to travel via them.

Such compounds are referred to as metal-organic frameworks.

The reveal was delivered by the academic institution during a news conference in Stockholm.

Prof. Kitagawa is affiliated with Kyoto University in the Asian nation, Richard Robson works for the Melbourne University in Australia, and Professor Omar M. Yaghi is connected to the University of California in the US.

Recent Award Winners in Science Categories

Last year, three other scientists won the award for their studies on proteins, which are fundamental components of biological systems.

This is the 3rd science award given recently. Earlier this week, three physicists received the Nobel Prize in Physics for their contributions on subatomic physics that paved the way for the advancement of the quantum computing system.

Earlier, three scientists investigations on how the immune system combats harmful microbes secured them the award for medical science.

A single winner, Fred Ramsdell, missed the news for nearly a day because he was on an off-grid outing.
