Crew Member Discloses Depression After Deluge of Backlash After Historic Trip
A Vietnamese-American astronaut has spoken candidly about her struggle with mental health after being subjected to a massive wave of online abuse in the aftermath of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.
The 34-year-old activist – celebrated as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the brief journey to space in April, which also included celebrity crewmates.
The much-publicized journey was widely scrutinized by some, who cited its expense and environmental footprint.
Reflecting on the ordeal, Ms. Nguyen, who was celebrated as the pioneer for her community, stated the intense backlash eclipsed her moment under an landslide of gendered hatred.
“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” Ms. Nguyen stated in a public message, recalling a check-in call from a fellow crew member in the aftermath of the flight.
She characterized the press attention and digital reaction as an barrage beyond typical human coping.
“Stuck in Texas, I spent a week unable to rise from my bed,” she confessed. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”
Buried Under Misogyny
The researcher, who has dedicated her work to female health science and operated research during the mission, said all her lifelong efforts – from her studies and years of training to the personal milestone of her background – was drowned out under the tide of gendered attacks.
She is most acclaimed for her pioneering work fighting for justice for sexual assault survivors.
Her own goal of reaching space was deferred after an attack during her university years, leading to a years-long quest for justice.
The Fog Begins to Lift
Months following fulfilling her dream, she noted the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she expressed gratitude the followers whose support helped save her. “You were my salvation,” she wrote.
She concluded that despite the negativity, important benefits had resulted from the mission, including elevated attention for her scientific work and new advocacy opportunities.

The fully automated spacecraft lifted off from its launch site in April, carrying the historic roster on a short trip that passed the internationally recognized boundary of outer space.
