Former FBI head James Comey has pleaded not guilty to making false statements to congressional representatives and obstructing a lawmaking procedure.

His attorney filed the answer representing him in a national courtroom in Alexandria, Virginia on mid-week.

Patrick Fitzgerald declared he would seek to have the legal matter terminated for several reasons including that his defendant, a opponent of former President Trump, was being singled out.

Mr Comey was indicted soon after Donald Trump urged his top legal official to proceed against him.

In court on Wednesday, the defense counsel the legal representative advised the judge they aimed to file multiple legal requests to throw out the case before a legal hearing, arguing the government's case was retaliatory and that a US attorney was unlawfully designated to assume control of the proceedings.
