The Burmese junta claims it has taken control of one of the most notorious deception facilities on the border with Thai territory, as it retakes crucial area lost in the current domestic strife.

KK Park, south of the frontier settlement of Myawaddy, has been linked with online fraud, financial crime and forced labor for the recent half-decade.

Thousands were enticed to the facility with assurances of well-paid employment, and then compelled to run elaborate frauds, stealing substantial sums of money from targets all over the globe.

The junta, previously compromised by its associations to the fraud industry, now declares it has taken the facility as it expands control around Myawaddy, the main economic route to Thailand.

Junta Expansion and Tactical Goals

In recent weeks, the armed forces has pushed back rebels in multiple areas of Myanmar, aiming to increase the amount of locations where it can conduct a planned poll, beginning in December.

It currently hasn't mastered large swathes of the country, which has been torn apart by fighting since a military coup in February 2021.

The vote has been dismissed as a sham by anti-junta elements who have vowed to block it in areas they control.

Origins and Expansion of KK Park

KK Park started with a lease agreement in the first part of 2020 to construct an industrial park between the Karen National Union (KNU), the armed ethnic group which controls much of this territory, and a little-known Hong Kong stock market firm, Huanya International.

Investigators believe there are links between Huanya and a notable China-based criminal personality Wan Kuok Koi, more commonly called Broken Tooth, who has subsequently invested in additional fraud centers on the border.

The compound developed quickly, and is easily visible from the Thai border of the border.

Those who were able to flee from it recount a harsh environment enforced on the thousands, many from African countries, who were confined there, made to labor long hours, with abuse and assaults applied on those who failed to achieve objectives.

Latest Actions and Claims

A announcement by the military's information ministry claimed its forces had "cleared" KK Park, liberating more than 2,000 employees there and seizing 30 of Elon Musk's Starlink internet equipment – widely used by fraud centers on the border boundary for internet functions.

The declaration blamed what it called the "terrorist" KNU and civilian militia units, which have been combating the military since the overthrow, for unlawfully controlling the area.

The junta's assertion to have closed this well-known scam facility is very likely aimed at its main patron, China.

Beijing has been urging the junta and the Thai government to take additional measures to stop the illegal operations operated by Asian networks on their border.

Previously in the year thousands of Chinese workers were taken out of deception complexes and transported on arranged aircraft back to China, after Thai authorities restricted supply to energy and energy resources.

Broader Situation and Continuing Activities

But KK Park is just a single of no fewer than 30 analogous complexes situated on the frontier.

A large portion of these are under the control of Karen militia groups allied to the military, and the majority are still active, with numerous individuals operating frauds inside them.

In actuality, the backing of these paramilitary forces has been critical in enabling the military push back the KNU and further opposition factions from land they took control of over the previous 24 months.

The military now controls nearly all of the highway linking Myawaddy to the rest of Myanmar, a objective the junta established before it holds the opening round of the vote in December.

It has taken Lay Kay Kaw, a new town founded for the KNU with Japanese financial support in 2015, a time when there had been expectations for lasting stability in Karen State following a national peace agreement.

That represents a more substantial setback to the KNU than the seizure of KK Park, from which it did get a certain amount of funds, but where the majority of the financial benefits ended up with military-aligned paramilitary forces.

A well-placed insider has revealed that deception operations is continuing in KK Park, and that it is likely the junta took control of just a portion of the extensive facility.

The source also believes Beijing is providing the Burmese armed forces lists of China-based individuals it desires taken from the scam compounds, and sent back to face trial in China, which may explain why KK Park was raided.
