Gareth Southgate has stated that he is not seeking a comeback in football management, noting that it would be challenging to duplicate the higher calling he encountered as the national team coach.

He suggested his plan to dedicate his efforts toward engaging the youth and addressing what he labeled a dominant downbeat story now prevalent in the country.

Exploring Fresh Opportunities Beyond The Sport

Speaking on air, the manager was prompted regarding speculation linking him with open coaching positions in the top flight and elsewhere.

“Leading my country gave my work in football a deeper meaning and purpose,” he replied. “That’s going to be very hard to replicate. Having had 37 years in football I’m enjoying finding other areas where I think I might be able to make a difference.”

A Passion for Role Models

Leading up to the launch of his new title, his new work on leadership, the author stated that he is “very passionate” about setting examples for young people, applying experiences from his time as leader of the England team between 2016 and 2024, as well as his role as a father.

He maintains that his experience managing the squad, during which the team transformed from being widely disliked to greatly admired, holds wider relevance.

“We had a huge disconnect with the public when we started,” he noted. “The public viewed the players as egotistical, yet we successfully reversed that image. The squad’s ability to connect diverse communities was truly powerful.”

Parenting and Guiding Young People

Drawing on his family life, he commented: “You want to give your kids the best possible start, but there is a point when they don’t want to listen to parents any more. I experienced that in my house in the same way everybody else will … but I do think this is an important space for us.”

He continued: “Currently, a pessimistic story dominates national discourse, and we must offer youth optimism and direction. The country is full of potential, but young individuals require positive influences and supportive peers, as these choices shape their futures profoundly.”

Common Ground Above Discord

Southgate stressed that “what brings the nation together outweighs what pulls it apart” but that the societal attention often highlights disagreement.

“One can see why many feel disillusioned,” he said. “Many areas face economic hardship, which naturally inspires demands for improvement. However, I’ve experienced the power of national unity. In the Covid crisis, acts of community support showed the country at its finest, proving our resilience when challenged.”

The manager’s upcoming publication, titled Dear England, is expected to present additional perspectives on leadership and national identity drawn from his distinguished professional journey.
