The Tooth Fairy Story Review: Cartoon Journey with a Touch of Family-Friendly Tween Romance

Throughout this cartoon journey aimed at tweens, the world of fairies is dedicated to gathering teeth from slumbering youngsters and placing treasure under their pillows. Skateboarding teenage rebel fairy Van (voiced by Booboo Stewart) is less than thrilled about devoting his life to gathering baby teeth—a sentiment that’s completely understandable. He’s only a bit more interested in the underlying economics behind it all: the fairies deliver the teeth to mysterious goblins, who provide metal in exchange. However, Van’s interest is piqued when he catches sight of a goblin (voiced by Larkin Bell), who turns out to be far from the ugly creature he had imagined.

An Unlikely Connection and Shared Threat

The stage is set for an adventure with a light sprinkling of young love (even though it remains perfectly appropriate for children). The goblin and fairy groups are estranged from one another, and nothing fuels the thrill of the forbidden to unite beings as one. Both groups as seen here are incredibly similar, yet both maintain prejudiced beliefs about the other. The fairies are said to be entitled sorts, given to taking whatever they fancy, while goblins are allegedly stupid, smelly, and primitive, but are in fact intelligent and advanced in technology.

Of course, this scenario requires a common enemy to unite against, and that need is met by some nasty spiders, with voices by Jon Lovitz and Fran Drescher. There’s no beating about the bush with these guys: they aim to devour the fairies and goblins, and they make for fairly bloodthirsty, though not especially competent, villains.

Ideal Viewers and Final Thoughts

There aren’t all that many children’s animations aimed at the viewer group that is beginning to have early romances, but are not old enough for the content 14-year-olds are watching instead of popular teen sagas. If your child falls into this age group, this is unlikely to become their new favorite movie, but you could do worse.

The Tooth Fairy Story arrives in movie theaters in Scotland from 10 October and the rest of the UK from 24 October.
